Report by Rob Smallman

Driving to Norton Farm the same dream is replayed of winning a two day stake to fulfill that moment of that once in a lifetime opportunity to go to the pinnacle of our sport, the Retriever Championship.

When that moment came,I can honestly say I did not know whether to laugh, cry or run and leap in the air with utter relief.

The drive home was joyous with many pit stops as my phone rang and rang. I admit, I was choked and overwhelmed by so many kind words from so many.

Of the two days, the first was in the beet with ten dogs going through to the second day. Scent was patchy on day one which was a tense nip and tuck affair with some nice work from other dogs. I believe we had a leading dog and the rest of the field were pretty even. Day two was in another area and the conditions were fair in white grass and scrub. After a happy evening before day two it was back to keeping one's head above water and dig in..

Tikka "Tuscanni Viking" was on his metal and as always very keen which kept me on my toes. We just tried to hold it together and keep tidy and hope for a chance which came towards the end of the trial.

I thank all concerned for our two days and for all the organization by those at Norton Farm and the West of England Labrador Retriever Club. The Guns shot very well and my thanks go to Nick Jordan and his team. Sandra and Norman Onens laid on two good days of steady game supply and ran a very good line assisted by their Gamekeeper Will. Thanks go to Geoff Hatfield ,our Chairman, for doing a great job in getting the whole thing off the ground with such a lot to do ! My thanks naturally go to our Judges Mark and Jamie Bettinson,John Keegan and Phil Bruton. Thank you, to you all and all other helpers with the days.

Nobody will ever know just how much this win means to me and my family. To go to Windsor is a huge honour and Her Majesty the Queen who has supported our sport for so long has provided a setting for more dreaming the dream.

My last thanks go to Tikka for many happy days. Best Wishes and Good Luck to each and everyone of you in every thing you do with your dogs. Rob Smallman
